Review! Wet N Wild Silk Finish Lipstick - 9 colors with swatches!

Wet n Wild's website is pretty darn sparse when describing this lipstick line:
"SILK FINISH® LIPSTICK
Enriched with conditioning ingredients of Vitamins A & E and Aloe Vera for moist-looking lips."
Seriously, that's it.  Which is unfortunate, because this is actually a pretty nice formulation.  There's no funky smell, and to me it smells very, very, very faintly of a minimally scented soap.  It glides on smoothly, and feels light and soft on the lip.  It is not overly moisturizing, but it is not drying, either.  I usually have a bit of lip balm on my lips before putting on my lipstick, but I can go without it and not have to worry about my lips drying out.
The shimmer is nice, and not gritty.  I like shimmer and shine (but not frost) to my lipsticks, and these fit the bill.  There are two colors on here with "Frost" in the name, and they are leaning towards frost, but to me they don't quite make it there.  In other words, it doesn't feel 80's to me, it feels like a more modern "frost".  When I think of "frost", I think of white glowy shimmer, and this is more like a clear white sparkle.
The lipstick is sheer with a light swipe, but all of the colors build easily without getting clumpy.  It has a nice pigmentation.  Wear time varies, but I usually get about 2 hours with the lighter colors, and about 4 hours with 552A - Just Garnet.  The darker colors do stain a bit.  Because the colors start off sheer, your natural lip color will affect the tone unless you put on a heavier application, or wear a lip base.
The packaging is cheap.  There's no other way to say it.  The lipstick does not swivel all the way (not even mostly) down the tube, so you have to be careful with the cap or you'll gouge a chunk of it out.

Review! Lioele Beyond the Solution BB Cream

Lioele Beyond the Solution BB Cream was included in my Pretty and Cute haul in this post.

This is the first Asian BB Cream that I have tried, and overall, I liked it.  I thought it was a pretty good match to my skintone, and I only had that opinion challenged once.  I was in The Sage Tree Salon and Spa, and apparently they have a certain kind of light to help them with hairdye colors.  I looked like Morticia Addams.  Not that it's necessarily a bad thing... but it wasn't the look I'm going for.  Elle said that the lights made everyone's makeup look funky, so I'm writing off that experience as a fluke.

Application:  The formula is creamy, and has a medium viscosity.  I used less than a pea-sized amount for my entire face.  If I used more than that, the coverage was very heavy.  I prefer a medium to light coverage, so I tried to not be over-zealous in my application.  After the first layer, you can wait a few minutes for that layer to set and dry, and then you can apply another layer.  It builds very nicely, with no caking.  I added an extra layer in places I would normally use concealer.
I placed dots of the cream around my face, and then used my stippling brush to pat it all over my face.  After it was all patted on, I swirled the brush around my face in small circles.  I felt like this gave me the most smooth application, and did a good job of hiding any large pores.  One light application evened out my skin tone and concealed almost all of my face's redness.  It didn't quite cover the pink in the apples of my cheeks, but I put blush there anyway, so I didn't care.

As a side note, I have mentioned before that I never put foundation on my cheeks, because it seemed silly to cover them and then put the color right back on with blush.  Asian BB Creams tend to have skin whiteners in them, so I didn't want the effect to be uneven.  Therefore, the BB Cream went all over all the skin on my face.

Bare face - Unflattering pic, but the point is you can see my skin, right?
With one layer of Lioele Beyond the Solution BB Cream.  No additional cream was added under eyes or in other areas that I might normally add concealer.  Again, and unflattering pic...
That's a pretty stunning difference, especially because of the tiny amount of product you use.

Now, here is a picture from today, one week from when I first started using it, with makeup.  Notice my left cheek (on your right).  You can barely see that dark spot anymore!

Wear:  This product does not control oil.  I have normal skin, with a oily nose.  Sometimes my forehead will join in the fun, but only rarely.  After about 2 hours, I needed to blot my nose.  Then it was pretty much every hour or two after that.  I did set my face with a little bit of powder, and that seemed to delay the first blotting.  The BB Cream wore off my nose the first day I wore it, but after I figured out how to apply it, I didn't lose coverage in the rest of the trials.

Overall, it was comfortable to wear.  It didn't feel heavy or mask-like, and I felt like it almost looked better as the day wore on and it settled more and more into my skin.  I don't mean that like settling into fine lines or creasing up, but actually soaking into my skin, much like your moisturizer does, but much more slowly.

For nightly cleansing, I found the cream to be water-resistant.  I had to use a facial cleanser to get it off of my face.  I'm used to using a warm and wet washcloth to wipe my face clean, and then using a mild cleanser to clean my face.  That did not work for me with the BB Cream.  I wet my face and swirled the water around with my fingertips.  Then I used a warm and wet washcloth to gently wipe my entire face.  Then I applied the cleanser and gently rubbed with my fingertips.  After that I used my facial brush to swirl more warm water on my face, with the cleanser still on there.  Finally I wiped my face clean with the washcloth, and then splash a bit more water on there to get any remaining residue off.

Effects:  I'm not sure how much my new cleansing routine affected my skin, but I am very pleased with how my skin is looking.  There seems to be a more even tone, smaller pores, and it feels very soft and smooth.  The dark spot on my left cheek seems to have faded a bit, too.

Trial Notes:  I kept short notes from my trial week.  I am going to transcribe them as I wrote them, so you can see how my application methods developed, and so that I am not coloring my early perceptions with my ending opinion.  I did go one day make-up free, so there are only 6 days of notes.

Day 1: Smells like floral soap.  Looks very pale at first, even though it comes out of the tube beige.  Faded off of nose within 4 hours.  Still too pale for my skin after oxidization. Looked okay indoors; looked much better outdoors.

Day 2:  Not really happy with how my pores look with this.  Tried the "pat on" method today, and still had very visible pores.  Adding cream blush with stipple brush significantly improved pore appearance.  Patted on second layer to nose, significant pore coverage, nearly flawless, rubbed lightly after patting, to fill in pores.

Day 3:  Apply with stipple brush, big difference!  Much more coverage, pores are nearly invisible.  Nose still got oily.  Seems to be water-resistant.  Needs cleanser to remove.  Breaking out a little, but could be from new cleansing routine.  Break outs aren't bad, very small.

Day 4:  Noticed fading of dark spot on left cheek.  Break outs from yesterday healed and gone.  Did get a new one, again, it was small.

Day 5:  Used with primer.  No difference to performance.  Breakout from yesterday healed and gone, no new blemishes.  Skin looks more even toned when bare.

Day 6:  Very happy with coverage, blending, skintone match.  I feel like I figured out the perfect amount to apply to my face.  Instead of doing multiple layers for concealer, I put heavier amounts in those places, so now I get one-coat-coverage.  No blemishes.  Dark spot is quite faint.

Review! Skin79 Bright Pearl Essential Mask

Skin79 Bright Pearl Essential Mask was part of my Pretty and Cute haul from last week.
Here is a picture from Skin79's website:
I tried this mask on Sunday night, after cleaning and exfoliating my face.  I tried to get a photo of the package, but it was so reflective, and my lighting was so dim, that I couldn't get a good one.  The mask comes out of the pouch very wet, and to me it smells of apricot.  I thought it was a pleasant scent, although at first it was a little heady.  it fit my face well for the most part.  I could have used a touch more room for my eyes, but that could be solved by snipping a little slit in the eye hole next time.  Also, the nose piece is a bit small for me, as well as the mouth area.  Overall, these were made to fit a more petite face, but the fit issues weren't great enough to make me feel disappointed, just slightly giant-like, and it made me laugh.

You leave the mask on your face for 10-15 minutes.  I think I left it on there for 16 minutes while I watched TV.  There was no sensation to my skin other than cold wetness.  After the 16 minutes, I removed the mask and massaged my skin to work in the fluid left on my face, as the directions instruct.  It didn't soak in (there is a lot of moisture left there), so I just smoothed it out and let it dry.  Once dry, it felt filmy and sticky.  The feeling was unpleasant.  I wanted to wash my face, but I didn't want to undo the process, so I left it alone.  After about an hour, most (but definitely not all) of that filmy feeling went away, and my skin no longer felt sticky.  I did not see immediate results.

I left my face alone until morning, and in the morning I showered and rinsed my face with water only.  My skin felt kind of slimy once the water hit it, much like moisturizer feels like when you get it wet after application.  I gently rubbed my face with my hands to get off as much excess as I could.  My face again felt filmy, but not nearly as much as it did the night before.

Then I got a good look in the mirror.  I felt that there was a definite difference.  My skin looked much more even toned.  It didn't quite look like I already put on my foundation, but very close.  It was pretty impressive.

Two mornings later, and the effects have worn away.  However, the performance of this mask has made me quite interested in the rest of Skin79's skincare line, and I plan to replace my current cleansers and serums with their products when I run out.  If that filmy feeling wasn't there, I would give it much higher praise.

Pros:
Cheap, around $2.50 per mask
Easy to use
Smells nice
It seems to work!

Cons:
Effects lasted less than 2 days, and were not immediate
Mask is designed for a more petite face (not a con for a petite-faced person, of course)
Filmy feeling after use

Have you tried this mask?  What did you think of it?

Ulta Sale Haul - Brushes and Mascara

We were in the area of my local Ulta yesterday, so I dropped in really quickly to pick up another realTechniques stippling brush and a new Rimmel Mascara.  I was pleasantly surprised to see that both items were on sale, buy one get one half off.  So, I ended up with a few extra items that I would have bought soon anyway, and I got them cheaper! Yay!

realTechniques Stippling Brush
The website says:
This dual-fiber brush is the trade secret for creating airbrushed, high-definition results with all types of makeup:
  • look pixel-perfect even in harsh light
  • ultra-plush, synthetic taklon bristles are hand-cut and 100% cruelty-free
  • self-standing for easy storage
  • extended aluminum handle is light and easy to use
I say, this is my second stippling brush from realTechniques.  My first one is just fine, but since I use it both for my BB creams/foundation/tinted moisturizer and my cream or gel blushes, I wanted one for each.  These brushes are great.  I have a foundation brush, but it is more like a flat paintbrush, and I honestly never got the hang of using it for a light to medium foundation coverage.  This stippling brush makes it so easy to put on foundation and make it look perfect... it's kind of amazing, really.  I used to be a die-hard fingers or damp facial wedge girl, but now I'm quickly converting to the stipple brush.  I've only been using mine for a couple of weeks, but there has been no shedding yet.  The lady at Ulta said she's had hers for a year, and has experienced no shedding from her brush.

realTechniques Powder Brush
The website says:
Evenly apply powders and mineral foundations for smooth, high-definition results:
  • look pixel-perfect even in harsh light
  • ultra-plush, synthetic taklon bristles are hand-cut and 100% cruelty-free
  • self-standing for easy storage
  • extended aluminum handle is light and easy to use
I say, I haven't tried it yet.  Out of the box, it is lightweight, but not too lightweight as to feel cheap.  The bristles are very, very soft.  I have an old Bare Minerals brush that I've used for years now, and it's probably time to retire it.  So, this brush is meant to replace it.

UPDATE! - I tried out this brush, and it is amazing.  It is super-soft, and it picks up powder very well.  It distributes easily, and lays down the powder without disturbing my other products.  I totally recommend this brush!

Rimmel Extra Wow Lash
The website says:
Extra WOW Lash mascara, the new volume and lash building mascara with a 50% larger brush for WOW volume. The supersized brush makes it easy to build soft to dramatic look with visible progressive volume up to 12X.Lash building formula for highly defined lashes. No clumping.

Review to come later!  UPDATE - Here is the review!

Rimmel The MAX Volume Flash
The website says:

Our BIGGEST BRUSH EVER with unique ‘Perfect Fit’ technology for perfect loading of each lash. No clumps. 14 x lash volume with no clumps. 10 seconds flat!

Rimmel Glam'Eyes
The website says:
Glam’eyes delivers ultimate lash seduction thanks to its unique Volumflex brush. Coloured powder-pink for sexy boudoir glamour, its supple bristles are ultra-fine for sleekly groomed lash definition. Glam'eyes mascara wraps each lash with the creamy lash-building formula for lashes that appear styled with up to 10 x more volume and an 80% longer look.

Review to come later!  UPDATE - Here is the review!

So, there's my Ulta haul.  I didn't shop very much, because my family was waiting on me and I just went in to get one tube of mascara and the stippling brush, so my branching out only extended to those similar items that were on sale.

Did anyone else go shopping this weekend?  What did you get?

Review! Wet N Wild Megalast Lipstick Review and Swatches - 11 Colors!

The Wet n Wild website has this to say about their Megalast Lipsticks:
Lips take center stage! This 4-hour, longwearing lip color leaves a semi-matte, crème finish in one stroke.  Glides on easily with rich, velvety color that doesn't cake, feather, or bleed.  Made with hydrating skin-care ingredients: Hyaluronic Microspheres provide extraordinary adhesion to lips, an exclusive polymer complex offers cushion-like feel and texture, and natural marine plant extracts Coenzyme Q10 and Vitamins A & E help smooth lips.

These lipsticks range from 99 cents to about $3, depending on where you buy it.  I remember Wet n Wild from when I was a teenager… I tried their stuff once, threw it all away, and bought more expensive drugstore brands.  This year, when the nude lip was getting popular, I wanted to try out the look without spending a fortune on all the different shades, so I figured I could try them for the shade, then find a high-end color dupe, and toss the cheap stuff.  Except… I didn’t need to toss the cheap stuff.  I went back and bought more colors.  I bought more formulations, I bought in to Wet n Wild.  Believe me, I was shocked.  For a makeup addict, these lipsticks help satisfy the urge to buy into every new trend, and it won’t break your budget.

Megalast lipsticks are full-coverage and long lasting.  These lipsticks will completely conceal your natural lip color, so you won’t need a lip concealer to achieve the color in the tube.  What you see is what color your lips are going to be.  There is no shimmer or sparkle in this line.  They are matte, but I didn’t experience any drying of my lips.  The formula doesn’t dry to a flaky sheet on the lip, so you can keep on rubbing your lips together throughout the day, and it won’t destroy the application.

I have stayed far away from matte lipsticks since I used Revlon Colorstay back in the 90’s.   Remember that stuff?  It was dry, drying, flaky, clumpy, dull, and a pain to re-apply.  I wasn’t expecting this formula to be so different, but it almost feels like a cream, although it gives that matte look.  If you want a shine to it, top it with some lip balm or lip gloss.  The color will still stick around for quite some time.

Prior to applying on the lip, though, make sure you wipe off a thin layer from the lipstick in the tube.  That top layer on the tube DOES dry to a flaky almost-sheet thingie, and you need to get that off before you put it on your lips.  I wipe it with a lint-free tissue first, then I rub it with my finger until it warms up, and if any little clumps are on there, I wipe it off again with the tissue.  Once you wipe off that layer from the tube, you will notice that the lipstick now looks more like a cream than a matte.  If it doesn’t look creamy, take of some more from the tube.  Once it looks more like a cream, go ahead and apply it.  You can use a brush or go straight from the tube.  You can also lightly pat your lips with the tube and it will give you a much more sheer look.

Be warned that these colors stain.  If you are trying out one of the darker colors for the first time, maybe try it out on a night you are planning to stay home.  Let me put it this way, when I did the color swatches on my arm, it took 5 baby wipes and some very firm scrubbing to get it off… and my arm is still faintly pink, red, and purple.

Pros:
CHEAP!!!
These lipsticks are known to be dupes for many high-end brand colors.
Full Coverage
Long Lasting
Non-drying
Excellent Availability

Cons:
Stigma attached to the brand can be hard to get over.
You have to prep the color in the tube before every application.
Sometimes the tube falls apart, check yours in the store before buying by turning it upside down to see if the lipstick falls to the end of the cap.
The lipstick does not fully retract into the tube, so you might want to be careful putting the cap back on so you don't nick the lipstick with the cap.

Here are the same colors, in dimmer lighting.  So this is what you might end up with in nighttime lighting:

In the photos below, you'll notice a few things.  One, some of the tubes have lipstick on them.  That is from either the interior tube falling out of place, or the cap nicking the lipstick as I put the cap back on.  Be sure to turn your tube upside down in the store to see if the interior tube falls out of place.  It won't hurt the lipstick if you get a tube that does that, but you will end up with a messy tube.  Two, you will see a white-ish film on some of the colors.  That is where the lipstick dried and made the little sheet thingie.  That's what you want to get off the top of the lipstick before you apply it to your lips.

Ok, so here are the colors I currently have, which are swatched out above:

Multi-Review! Garnier, Tarte, Hard Candy

Today I have a multi-product review of Garnier's BB Cream, Tarte's Natural Cheek Stain, and Hard Candy's Glamoflauge.

First, a bare face.
I don't have a whole lot to cover up, so I mostly look for foundations that will just even out my skin tone a little bit.  I don't have any problems going completely without foundation if I'm not in the mood to fiddle with it, and I'm fortunate enough to have clear skin that looks just fine bare (I think so, anyway).

I am finding more interest in corrective measures, such as wrinkle prevention, spot correctors/skin whiteners, and pore minimizers.  From the chatter I've heard, the BB Creams from Korea are the best for these purposes, but before I knew that, I tried out Garnier's BB Cream, Skin Renew Miracle Skin Perfector in Light/Medium.  So, it's more of an ultra-thick tinted moisturizer.  It has sunscreen in it, and it is moisturizing.  It also feels heavy and greasy if you put on too much.  All you should need is a pea-sized amount, dot it around your face, and then rub it in.  Seriously, really rub it in.  Any skin-perfecting, airbrush finishing is going to come from filling in the pores with product.  Yep, it sounds gross.  But hey, it's skin, we've all got it, and most of us have the same issues with it.  So put on your first layer, and then let it set for a few minutes.  If you want it to help conceal large pores, take a teeny-tiny amount, and apply it to areas that didn't smooth over as well as you would like.  Then really rub it in.  You are kind of spackling it up, honestly.

The finish is dewy, but not glittery.  I like dewy, and I like glittery, too.  If you want a matte finish, you will need to set it with powder.  My nose tends to get oily throughout the day, so I blot it with plain tissue paper, and it doesn't disturb the cream.  I have been using this product for about 3 weeks, and I have not noticed any benefits that last after I remove the cream.  So, I do like it, but it really is just a thick tinted moisturizer.

Here's a pic with just the BB Cream added to the bare face from above.  There's not much difference in the photos other than an evened out skin-tone.  In person, you would see that the pores around my nose have been concealed.
Now, I do have a bit of darkness under my eyes and along the bridge of my nose.  That's what you get when you have an infant in the house.  Today the dark circles weren't so bad, but man, you should have seen it on Monday.  Yikes.  Anyway, to combat the dark circles, I use Hard Candy's Glamoflauge Heavy Duty Concealer in Medium.  Does it work?  Holy smokes, does it ever!  This stuff stays in place all day long.  It only takes a teeny, tiny, little itty bitty bit to do each eye.  It was designed to cover up tattoos, so your dark circles are no match for this stuff!  I apply it under my eye, along the bridge of my nose, and then I blend it down the side of my nose, the part where my cheek meets my nose, and then the top of the cheekbones.  Basically, it's just thinning the product out to nothing so that you don't have reverse-racoon eyes.  I usually only use this concealer on days when my circles are super-dark.
And there is a picture of my face after applying the Glamoflauge.

Finally, we get to my new favorite blush, Tarte's Natural Cheek Stain.  I have the shade "Blissful".  It is a peachy coral shade, with tones of pink.  I apply it with a stippling brush (realTechniques brand), and it goes on so easily.  You can build up to the intensity you prefer, and I recommend that you build it up slowly, as it doesn't come off easily.  Well, it washes off just fine, but you'll be taking off your foundation, too.  So do build up your intensity slowly.  This blush also has a nice fragrance to it; to me it smells of mandarin oranges.  I don't know how long the scent lingers, because I am not overly sensitive to fragrances.

I have never liked blushes.  When I first started wearing makeup, I would wear blush, but I always thought it looked so fake, so powdery, so cakey.  I abandoned blush for years, only using a dark shade to contour the hollows of my cheeks.  With cream and gel blushes (Tarte is a gel), I can blend the color into my skin, and the look is much more natural.  My aim with foundation, blushes, and contouring powders isn't really to change the way I look; I just want to perfect it a little bit.  With that said, here is a picture of all the above, plus Tarte's Natural Cheek Stain in Blissful:
And finally, with the rest of my makeup applied:

Review! Lash Tinting AND Rimmel Scandaleyes

Professional Lash tinting!
I've decided to put the Latisse reviews on hold until I make it to 8 weeks, and then 16 weeks.  However, I am still completely obsessed with getting these eyelashes of mine to look super long, and so I had them dyed.  Let's get right to the pictures!

Before (it looks weird because I was smiling):

After:

You can see that the tips are no longer blonde/clear.  There is a bit of smudging, because the "after" pics were taken immediately after the procedure, and it can take a showering to get any little bits off the skin.  It's not a problem I'm concerned with, but if you have a hot date or an important meeting, you might not want to go get this done on your way there.  That said, this is a quick treatment.  You can easily fit it into your lunch break, which is what I did today.  I did not wear any makeup to my appointment, because my eyes tend to water even though nothing is actually irritating them (seriously, it's silly), and I didn't want makeup streaking down my face.

The results last anywhere from 1-3 months depending on the dye used.  This does not lengthen or thicken lashes, it only darkens them.  So if you have light lashes, it will make them appear longer and thicker, because you'll be able to see them without mascara.

I had mine done professionally by Elle, a lovely cosmetologist at the Sage Tree Salon in Des Moines, Iowa.  You can also buy do-it-yourself kits online and in beauty supply stores.  If you choose to try this yourself, please follow all of the directions included in the kit, including the patch tests.  Your eyesight is very precious; don't be careless.

Rimmel Scandaleyes Mascara:

Before I started using Latisse, I was using Rimmel Volume Accelerator Mascara.  I loved it. L.O.V.E.D. it!  But, I didn't want it skewing my Latisse results, so I discontinued using it during week 2, and switched over to Rimmel Scandaleyes mascara.  At first, I wasn't very impressed with Scandaleyes, because it does not give one-coat coverage like Volume Accelerator does.  It takes two coats of Scandaleyes to get a nice and full, fluttery look.  By two coats, I mean apply one coat by making multiple passes over the lashes quickly, let that dry, then repeat.  So I'm actually passing the wand over my lashes 10-12 times by the time I'm finished.  With Volume Accelerator, I only passed over my lashes 2-3 times, with no second coat.

However, I don't think Scandaleyes should be disregarded.

It is not waterproof, but I noticed that there is no flaking, and there is very little (if any) smudging throughout the day.  I've tried most of the other drugstore brands of mascara (Covergirl, Maybelline, Revlon, Almay), and all of them have smudged and flaked except for Revlon's Colorstay (the original formula that has been discontinued for years now).  Both Scandaleyes and Volume Accelerator completely impressed me with their staying power.

For me, with my Latisse experiment, the best part is that they are not waterproof, so they wash off very easily with water and a washcloth.  I don't have to tug at them, and I don't need to use an oil-based makeup remover to get it off.  Not needing an oil-based makeup remover is very important for the Latisse application.  Not pulling out my new, super-long lashes is very important for the vanity part. *wink*

For overall appearance, Scandaleyes is a very natural look, I think.  The less you put on, the more natural it looks, but even several coats don't cause a clumpy, spidery mess.  Let's see some pictures, yes?

On your left is two coats of Scandaleyes, on your right is no mascara, but it is after the lash tint:
And here is both eyes with two coats of Scandaleyes.  It looks a little smudgy here, but some of that is from the last tinting process.  Also, keep in mind that I am not wearing any other makeup, so I didn't perfect the under eye area with concealer, foundation, or powders.
